Replit vs Cursor vs Lovable vs Bolt (2026): which AI app builder should you actually use?
All four get called “AI app builders,” but they’re built for genuinely different people. Pick wrong and you’ll fight the tool the whole way. Here’s the honest breakdown of what each is best at — and how to choose in about a minute.

The one-glance comparison
| Tool | Best for | Strengths | Watch-outs | Rough price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Replit | Building & shipping a full app solo, no local setup | All-in-one: database, hosting, deploy built in; mix AI with real code; runs entirely in the browser | Usage-based costs can be unpredictable on heavy builds; the IDE has more surface area for total beginners | $25/mo Core ($20 annual) |
| Cursor | Developers editing an existing codebase with AI | Superb AI code editing in a familiar VS Code-style editor; deep control; fast for real engineers | Not a from-scratch no-code builder; you bring your own project, environment and hosting | ~$20/mo Pro |
| Lovable | Non-technical founders building a SaaS MVP | Design-led; generates a React frontend with Supabase auth & database; one-click deploy; smooth onboarding | Opinionated stack (React-only); less backend customization; you work the way Lovable wants | ~$25–$100/mo |
| Bolt | Developers who want framework choice | In-browser Node sandbox with visible files & a terminal; supports React, Vue, Svelte, Astro; transparent | You handle more of the backend setup yourself; onboarding is less hand-held | ~$25–$200/mo |
Prices are approximate as of September 2026 and mostly usage- or credit-based, so real cost depends on how much you build. Always confirm current pricing on each tool’s site.
How to pick in one minute
Choose Replit if…
You want to go from an idea to a live, deployed app without touching a local dev environment. The database, hosting and deployment are built in, and you can let the AI Agent build while still dropping into real code when you want. It’s the best fit for solo builders and indie founders shipping a whole product in one place — which is exactly why I use it for most of my build-in-public projects.
Choose Cursor if…
You’re a developer working in an existing codebase and you want the best AI pair-programmer inside a familiar editor. Cursor isn’t trying to host or deploy your app for you — it makes writing and refactoring code dramatically faster. Many people even “graduate” to Cursor once a project outgrows a managed builder.
Choose Lovable if…
You’re non-technical and want the smoothest path to a polished SaaS MVP. Lovable is design-led and opinionated: it hands you a React app wired to Supabase with auth and a database, and deploys in a click. The trade-off for that ease is that you build the Lovable way, on the Lovable stack.
Choose Bolt if…
You’re comfortable with code and you care about framework flexibility — React, Vue, Svelte or Astro — with visible files and a terminal you control. Bolt is transparent and developer-oriented; you’ll do a bit more of the backend wiring yourself in exchange for that control.
My honest take
I make no secret that I build on Replit and share a discount for it — so read this knowing that. But the reason I keep coming back to it is real: for one person turning an idea into a shipped app, having the database, hosting and deployment in the same browser tab removes an enormous amount of friction. Lovable is genuinely lovely for non-technical founders, Bolt is great if you want framework freedom, and Cursor is the one I’d reach for inside a big existing codebase. There’s no universal winner — there’s the right tool for what you’re building.
If that’s “ship a full app from scratch, solo, today,” Replit is where I’d start.
